Offshore project progress - Wednesday 15 April 2015

EUROPE: Recent updates from Scotland's 450MW Neart Na Gaoithe, the 49.5MW Kentish Flats Extension in England and the 600MW Gemini project in the Netherlands.

GeoSea's Neptune jack-up vessel will be used at the Kentish Flats Extension

Neart Na Gaoithe

Transformer chosen: Mainstream Renewable Renewable's 450MW Neart Na Gaoithe project in Scotland will feature Siemens'  (OTM). The new technology removes the need for a large, heavy offshore substation and the associated specialised installation vessels. Instead, two turbines can support the OTM modules, which include transmission equipment.

Mainstream also said vessels contractor GeoSea will use a "Boom Lock" system developed by High Wind BV. It allows installation of offshore wind components in winds up to 15 m/s, reducing the workdays lost to unsuitable weather. The system is mounted on an offshore crane and controls the movement of the load and the crane hook.

Both systems were unveiled in March. Mainstream said the use of the two could help the project "produce the cheapest ever electricity generated from a UK offshore wind farm". 13-Apr-15

Kentish Flats
