The company's new Exceed gearbox series is on show at the WindEnergy Hamburg event in Germany (23-26 September).
Moventas product manager Kari Uusitalo said the new gearbox can produce "150 Newton metres per kilogram" and the firm is now aiming to develop a gearbox able to produce 200 Newton metres per kilogram.
"If you can reach higher torque density it either means you can use less mass with the same input torque, or you can put in more input torque through the gearbox within the same mass.
"So, overall, it will influence the levelised cost of energy with the tower head mass of the wind turbines," he said.
Last week, Moventas announced plans to establish a wind gearbox service facility in St Paul in Minnesota, to deal with what it described as "growing demand" in the US.
