The new unit installed in Wieringermeer in the Netherlands has been certified as a 3MW machine, following measurements taken over a two-month period, showing a 6% increase in yield over the 2.7MW turbine.
Alstom also announced that it has signed a global partnership with engineering firm Freyssinet to develop a 119-metre concrete tower specifically designed for the ECO122. This new tower will be made of 11 concrete sections, the lowest measuring 7.2 metres in diameter, for the base of the structure.
The new tower is designed to harness the stronger winds at higher heights than the current 89-metre steel tower used with the ECO122 allows, enabling the construction of projects on lower wind sites.
Alstom also has an existing memorandum of understanding with Max Bögl Wind for the development of a 139-metre concrete and steel tower, and Alstom said it will offer both new towers to customers.
Siemens recently announced that it has uprated its 3MW direct-drive machine to 3.2MW, claiming the new model would have a 4% higher annual energy output compared with the previous version.
