The government said it will no longer accept applications for offshore projects under its feed-in tariff (Fit) program and will suspend those that have already been filed.
It said that more scientific study needs to be done before the rules for offshore development can be developed.
No projects on the Ontario side of the Great Lakes had received final approval but several were in the planning stages.
Windstream Energy’s 300MW Wolfe Island Shoals project in Lake Ontario was the only offshore project to have won a Fit contract.
The province placed a moratorium on offshore projects in 2006 while it examined environmental issues. The ban was lifted in 2008.
