Pattern and Samsung acquire two Ontario projects

CANADA: Pattern Energy and Samsung C&T Corporation has acquired the rights to develop two projects in Ontario.

The two companies have bought the Fargo Wind Project, from Suncor Energy, and a nearby development project from Northland Power.

Both projects will be wrapped into Pattern and Samsung’s 270MW South Kent wind farm, which is being developed this year.

"Together with Pattern, we are making major progress on our goal to bring new sources of wind energy to Ontario," said Cheol-Woo Lee, Samsung senior executive vice president.

"In addition to closing on these projects we are closing on thousands of acres in southwestern Ontario and the Bruce region for the development of more than 500MW of wind power."

In January last year, the Ontario government signed a controversial deal with a Korean consortium headed by the Samsung. The group pledged to invest C$7 billion over six years in renewable energy development and manufacturing in the province.

The deal includes the establishment of factories to produce turbine towers and blades, and the installation of 2GW of wind energy. The South Kent wind farm is one of the first projects to fall within this commitment.
