Toronto developer SouthPoint Wind is seeking over C$1 billion damages relating to its proposed wind farm on Lake Erie, which has been put on hold as a result of the Ontario government’s offshore moratorium.
Last September, developer Trillium Power filed a similar claim for C$2.25 billion (US$2.2 billion) after the administration suspended all Great Lakes wind farms on environmental grounds earlier in the year.
SouthPoint’s Wind claims the government "acted deceptively and deliberately" when it terminated applications for offshore schemes without notice, local media outlets reported.
Last February, the provincial government announced it would no longer accept applications for offshore wind projects under its feed-in tariff programme and would suspend those already filed.
The Ontario government said it would defend itself against the claims.
