Saint-Laurent Énergies, a partnership between France’s EDF Énergies Nouvelles and RES Canada, got the green light from the Quebec government for its 300MW Lac-Alfred Wind Farm in the Gaspésie region.
The project is the first of five Saint-Laurent wind farms to obtain an order-in-council from the province authorizing its construction and operation.
The company won contracts with Hydro-Quebec for 954MW of capacity in a call for wind energy that was completed in May 2008.
All five projects will utilise 2MW turbines supplied by Germany’s Repower Systems AG, which will source blades, towers and electrical converters in the region in order to meet local content requirements.
The first 150MW phase of Lac-Alfred’s construction is expected to be complete in 2012, with the remainder to come on line the following year.
Meanwhile, Edmonton-based Capital Power Corporation has received an environmental assessment certificate from the government of British Columbia for its C$455 million, 142MW proposed Quality Wind Project near Tumbler Ridge.
The approval is a "major milestone" in the company’s bid to have the project up and running by the end of 2010, says CEO Brian Vaasjo.
Capital Power won a contract for the output of the project, which will use 79 Vestas 1.8MW turbines, from BC Hydro earlier this year.
