REpower receives German grid certification for MM82 turbine

GERMANY: REpower has become the first manufacturer to receive certification for a turbine with a double-fed generator as meeting the requirements of Germany's new grid code.

REpower receives compliance certificate for the MM82 2MW turbine

This year all new wind turbines tying into Germany’s electricity network must comply with the country’s new grid code. Failure to comply will disqualify the machines from the premium rate paid to turbine owners.

Technical assurance and consulting company, Germanischer Lloyd, passed REpower’s MM82 2MW turbine at Dollerup wind farm near Flensburg, northern Germany.

According to REpower, simulation models needed to be developed in addition to actual tests, in order to meet the requirements of the certification.

The new rules aim to keep the grid stable. With many turbines producing so much power, transmission system operators have become unable tolerate them cutting out whenever there is a network disturbance.

Speaking about the certification Matthias Schubert chief technology officer said: "Of course, this certificate is very important for our German business but also for our activities in the international markets, where similarly demanding requirements apply, such as in Australia or Great Britain, for example."
