Schubert has been with the company since its founding 12 years ago and has been behind its product range. Repower said that CEO Andreas Nauen would oversee his duties until a replacement is found.

Schubert joined Repower from Aerodyn in 2001. He developed the 5MW turbine from 2002 to 2004 and the upscaled 6MW machine is now one of the world’s largest offshore turbines. He came in 20th in 2012's “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç list of the most influential people in the wind industry.

Speaking about his decision, Schubert said: "I have enjoyed my time here at Repower very much. I am extremely grateful for the exciting times I have lived through with Repower on its journey from a north-German niche player to a global champion."

He added: "I would also like to take this opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been working with [Suzlon chief executive] Tulsi Tanti and his senior team as well as Andreas Nauen."
