Siemens Gamesa, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, also supplied the inverters for the solar plant.
The project, which initially hosted a 50MW wind farm, now has 28.8MW of solar PV capacity.
The addition of new solar capacity was done without increasing the grid evacuation capacity of 50MW to demonstrate optimisation of transmission capacities resulting from integration of wind and solar.
Although the federal government has realised the benefits of wind-solar hybridisation, the main hurdles in pushing for hybrid projects has been the price estimation for such technology combinations.
Hero Power could circumvent the regulatory and policy vacuum in this project as the power purchaser is a private entity.
However, large-scale wind-solar hybridisation is still not viable in the utility sale model in the absence of a notified policy and supporting regulation.
