'Big four' dominate onshore installations

WORLDWIDE: The world's four leading turbine manufacturers accounted for 53% of global installations in 2017, according to annual figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF).

In line with standings released by FTI Consulting, BNEF found Vestas led the way once again in 2017.

Last year, the Danish manufacturer commissioned 7.7GW, equating to around 16% of the 47GW connected to the grid in the 12-month period.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) commissioned 6.8GW (15%), Goldwind 5.4GW (11%) and GE Renewable Energy 4.9GW (10%) as the "big four" dominated the global market.

"In 2017, quite a bit of distance opened up between GE in fourth place and the fifth-placed manufacturer, Germany's Enercon, with 3.1GW.

"Six other turbine makers, from Europe and China, had between 1GW and 3GW commissioned last year," said Tom Harries, senior wind analyst at BNEF and lead author of the report, Global Wind Turbine Market Shares.

The dominance of these leading suppliers could lead to continued market conslidation, BNEF warned.

Albert Cheung, head of analysis at BNEF, said: "We've seen a wave of mergers in the wind turbine manufacturing industry in the last few years, including the Siemens-Gamesa deal and Nordex's takeover of Acciona “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.

"With a large number of small players outside the big four, it would be no surprise to see further consolidation."

BNEF expects 2018 commissioning figures to rebound from the 12% fall seen in 2017. Around 55GW is expected to be installed in 2018, BNEF said, marking a 17% increase year on year.
