Array cables complete at Borkum West 2

GERMANY: Technip Offshore Wind has completed the installation of the array cables at the Borkum West 2 Phase 1 wind farm in the German North Sea.

The company completed the work using its CBT 1100 trenching system, which allows cables to be laid in varying soil types without the need for interchangeable tools, a technique that Technip claims increases efficiency.

This work on the 200MW wind farm is the first the company has completed in German waters.

Developer Trianel announced earlier this week that all of the 40 Areva M5000 turbines have now been installed at the wind farm 45 kilometres from the island of Borkum.

This, along with the completion of the array cables, means that the project is complete except for the DolWin Alpha transformer platform being brought online. This is due to be tested by transmission system operator Tennet, with the connection set to start operating later in the summer.

The wind farm is the first offshore project to be developed by municipal and regional authorities, which founded Trianel in 1999 to carry out large-scale projects.
