The initial impact of the investment, which will be made between 2014 and 2016, will be the expansion and modernisation of the company's blade plant in Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany.
The greater dimensions of the blades and moulds mean that modifications will have to be made to the production halls. A new hall for rotor blade finishing will also have to be built.
This will account for around half of the investment, with the rest of the funds going towards developing a "build-to-print" strategy with international suppliers, which will see other manufacturers fabricate blades to Nordex's designs.
Nordex said that this is necessary because around 80% of the company's business is conducted outside Germany. It remains committed to covering only 20 to 30% of its blade requirements internally.
The Rostock factory will now focus on producing the larger NR58.5 and NR65.5 blades for the N117/2400, N117/3000 and N131/3000 turbines.
Nordex has successfully established itself as a leader in low-wind turbines in recent years, with the N117/2400 providing the basis for the company's growth in market share.
The N117/3000 and N131/3000 were launched last year to increase its offering in the low- and medium-wind markets.
