Rösler, who is also Germany's vice-chancellor, officially opened the site, which contains 80 Bard 5MW turbines, on the service and transformer platform. Also present were Bard CEO Michael Baur and Lutz Diederichs, director of HypoVereinsbank, Bard’s financial partner.
Located 100 kilometres to the north-west of Borkum island, Bard Offshore 1 covers 60 square kilometres. The turbines, mounted on tripile foundations, operate in water depths of up to 40 metres..
Bard claims the project is already supplying 80% of the offshore electricity produced in Germany.
"Bard Offshore 1 is the impressive pioneering project of a young industry which has the potential to play a key role in our energy mix in the long term," said Rösler. "The successful completion of the offshore wind farm represents a technological and logistical feat."
Bard CEO Baur said: "The inauguration of this pioneering project sends an important signal in terms of the energy turnaround and the future of the offshore wind industry in Germany.
