Collision with foundation at Bard Offshore 1

Crew uninjured, but harbour police investigating

A shipping accident occurred at the offshore wind farm Bard Offshore 1, currently under construction in the German North Sea, at about 2am on 16 February 2013. An offshore service and supply vessel collided with one the wind farm's turbine foundations causing serious damage to the bow fender of the twin hulled vessel, according to Emden harbour police. The police are investigating whether international traffic or other rules were disregarded.

None of the six crew on board was hurt and the seaworthiness of the vessel itself was only lightly damaged. It was able to reach the island of Borkum, and from there the port of Emden, where it was checked over by Germanischen Lloyd shipping experts. It will be repaired at the Weser shipyard.

The 400MW Bard Offshore 1 wind farm has been under construction since 2010. Its slow progress has been largely due to the financial difficulties facing its owner, Bard Group.
