The Big Blue Wind Farm, being developed by Exergy, will use 18 of Gamesa’s G97 2MW Class IIIA turbine.
Gamesa says the machine, launched in North America two years ago, has an improved nacelle and a more aerodynamic blade design to allow it to work in areas with low wind speeds normally considered unsuitable for development.
"The G97 is a very efficient turbine and perfect for this site," said Exergy’s Dustin Shively, lead project engineer on Big Blue.
The project is located in Minnesota’s Faribault County and will be the county’s first commercial-scale wind farm.
Upon completion, the wind farm will be owned by Exergy’s subsidiary, Big Blue Wind Farm, LLC. Northern States Power will purchase the offtake, which is enough to power about 20,000 homes per year.
The wind farm will be completed and operational by the end of the year.
