This week Scottish first minister Alex Salmond met Jose Maria Ugusquiza, a member of the Gamesa board, in Bilbao. According to reports, Gamesa is looking at locations including the Highlands and Dundee.
Speaking about the meeting, Salmond said: "One of our key targets is to get that manufacturing component," said Mr Salmond. "Talks are at an advanced stage and [Gamesa] will be coming to Scotland in two weeks and looking at a number of key sites."
Scotland's offshore sector could provide the region with as many as 48,000 jobs both directly and in related sectors, according to a study by consultancy IPA Energy + Water Economics. This figure currently stands at 463.
Gamesa's interest follows an announcement by major shareholder Iberdrola that it would be investing €4.8billion in the UK over the next two years through its British subsidiary ScottishPower. Two thirds of the investment earmarked for wind projects, smart grid and distribution networks.
