According to regional power company EDA, the Graminhais facility - budgeted at EUR14.5 million - will incorporate ten 900kW turbines for an annual output of 22GWh.
It should also allow annual savings of 4,521 tonnes of fuel oil and reduce emissions by 13 million tons of carbon dioxide. Construction is due to begin this month.
EDA already operates wind farms on Flores, Pico, Faial, San Jorge, Graciosa and Santa Maria.
Some 27.8% of electricity produced in the Azores in the first six months of 2010 was from renewables and the regional government aims to increase this to 75% in eight years.

PORTUGAL - The first wind farm on the Azores island of San Miguel will be ready by the end of 2011 and account for 5% of total electricity generation on the most populated island of the Portuguese archipelago.
