Denmark's export success countered by falling domestic production

DENMARK: Denmark's wind industry looks set to grow by 5% in 2010, however this is set to be hampered by a growing trend for its companies to outsource manufacturing.

According to the latest report by the Danish Wind Industry Association (DWIA), exports in the wind sector have continued to rise. Last year 8.5% of Danish exports come from the wind sector compared  to 7.2% in 2008.

The number of employees has fallen from 28,000 in 2008 to just over 24,000 in 2009. This is reflected in the DWIA's statement that globalisation has led to Danish manufacturers setting up around the world. The DWIA said this is likely to continue.

This is underlined by the collective exports and revenue for the industry. Danish wind exports dropped from DKK44bn in 2008 to DKK41.7bn in 2009 while global revenues rose from DKK83.8bn to DKK91.4bn.

Recent analysis revealed the country's flagship turbine manufacturer Vestas was still the world's biggest producer of wind turbines with just over 14% of the market.
