The utility is now calling for bids from Spanish companies or joint ventures to design and build the plant on the Ngong Hills and operate it during the 12-month warranty period. The deadline for bids is March 16. A 5.1MW plant on the same site came online last year (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, July 2009). In a separate move, the Kenyan government announced plans to establish a $2 billion (EUR1.39 billion) revolving fund to assist private-sector investment in renewable energy generation. According to the finance ministry, the World Bank, German bank KfW, French Development Agency and the African Development Bank have agreed to support the fund, from which loans will be made to commercially viable wind energy, geothermal and biomass projects. The initiative is part of a government strategy to implement green energy projects totalling 2GW by mid-2012.
