Gamesa and Iberdrola handed Kenya project deal

KENYA: The construction of Kenya’s 13.6MW Ngong II wind farm by state-controlled power generator Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has entered the home stretch following its decision to award the development contract to Gamesa and Iberdrola.

The Ngong II project will use the G58 850KW turbine
KenGen, which generates about 1GW of electricity, the equivalent to 80% of Kenyan supply, has awarded the contract to a consortium formed by Iberdrola Ingeniería (40%) and Gamesa (60%).

The Ngong II project is sited at Ngong, some 30 kilometers from the capital Nairobi.

The project is expected to be completed over the next 18 months and will push KenGen’s overall wind capacity to 18.7MW.

KenGen managing director Edward Njoroge says Ngong II will have 16 G52 850KW wind turbines. Two months ago KenGen commissioned a 5.1MW wind farm at the same site.
