Taiwan Electric & Machinery Co Ltd (TECO) has bought a licence from American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) for the manufacture of a 2 MW turbine design. TECO is the world's third largest motor manufacturer. Its wind turbine will be sold in Taiwan and mainland China. TECO president Zhaokai Liu says the company aims to become Taiwan's leading wind turbine manufacturer and a major supplier for China. "Wind power is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative business opportunities today in Taiwan," he says. TECO is the parent of TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company of Round Rock, Texas, which is intending to manufacture the German Dewind line of turbines for the American market. AMSC acquired its wind turbine technology, now being built on licence in several countries, through its purchase in 2007 of small Austrian wind turbine design company Windtec, owned by long time wind industry member Gerald Hehenberger (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, January 2007).
