The Danish turbine maker had already cut 157 jobs at the factory in western Jutland earlier this year, as part of planned restructuring efforts. The Ringkøbing plant produces nacelles, hubs and drivetrains for onshore wind turbines.
A spokesperson for Vestas told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç that it now expects an additional 54 jobs to go at the plant as it ramps up production efforts at a facility in Colorado.
“As part of increased demand and order intake for Vestas’ V163 onshore turbine in the US, Vestas is expanding its production in Colorado, USA. Therefore, the majority of hub production will be moved from the factory in Ringkøbing to Colorado. This is expected to affect approximately 54 hourly-paid production employees in Ringkøbing,” the spokesperson said.
They added that the company would continue its presence in the Danish town and seek to find new roles for the affected employees.
“It is always difficult to make decisions that negatively impact our skilled and hardworking colleagues. We will explore opportunities to relocate affected colleagues in Ringkøbing to minimise the number of layoffs. We will continue to have a strong presence in Ringkøbing, where nacelles, hubs, and drivetrains for our 4MW and 6MW turbines will continue to be produced,” the spokesperson said.
The firm’s announced restructuring plans floated in November last year included an ambition to create 300 new jobs in both onshore and offshore wind turbine manufacturing at factories in Lindø (offshore nacelles), Nakskov (offshore blades), and Lem (onshore blades).
Vestas said last year it was investing $40 million (€36 million) to upgrade two of its production facilities in Colorado for producing the V163-4.5MW turbines.
