In an email to employees seen by “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, the manufacturer explained it was responding to "lower European market demand" and needed to "sustain (its) competitiveness".
The manufacturer currently employs over 600 people in production at the Ringkøbing plant. The job cuts will only affect the 530 production staff, the Danish company confirmed.
Ringkøbing only produces the 4MW platform, a Vestas spokesman told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
4MW platform
Vestas’ 4MW platform accounted for 3,437MW of its 5,696MW orders worldwide in the first half of 2019, according to turbine purchase agreements announced by the manufacturer.
However, European orders for the 4MW platform only totalled 342MW, or 81 units.
In January, Vestas also unveiled its EnVentus platform. The manufacturer claims the EnVentus platform’s flagship V150-5.6MW model will boost annual energy production by around 17% over the 4.2MW unit at 7.5m/s wind speeds.
Most of Vestas’ orders for the 4MW platform in the first half of the year came from beyond its core European markets — including contracts in the US, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam, Australia and China.
The Vestas spokesman would not comment on which markets the Ringkøbing plant serves or which other facilities produce the 4MW platform.
