A subsidiary of cabling company LS Cable and System plans to build a factory manufacturing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) in Virginia, in a boost to the development of offshore wind infrastructure on the US east coast.
LS Greenlink intends to invest $681 million in the factory, to be built on a brownfield site near the city of Chesapeake to produce HVDC submarine cables for the US’s expanding offshore wind fleet.
Virginia governor Glenn Youngkinn said the factory would cement Virginia’s status as a leader in manufacturing for the energy transition and claimed it would create 330 jobs in the state.
Virginia is currently hosting several offshore wind projects currently under development including the 2.64GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project which is due online in 2026.
