The 443MW Viking onshore wind farm – one of the largest in the UK – has produced its first power, project developer SSE Renewables confirmed this week (6 June)
Viking comprises 103 of Vestas' V117-4.0/4.2MW turbines and is located on the remote archipelago of Shetland off the north east coast of Scotland in the North Sea.
First power came ahead of Shetland being fully connected to the Scottish mainland for the first time, via a 260km HVDC subsea cable, which is due to be operational this summer.
Construction at Viking began in 2020. The project was impacted by the death of 23-year-old Liam MacDonald in 2022 in an incident investigated by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) watchdog.
Full commissioning at Viking is expected later this year.
