Record-breaking Vestas offshore turbine gets type certification

A giant 15MW offshore wind turbine model made by Danish manufacturer Vestas has received type certification.

The award was announced by the company, which said it was now preparing to roll out the V236-15.0MW turbines for offshore wind projects commercially.

Type certification is a process by which commercial wind turbine models are independently verified to make sure they comply with specific design and manufacturing regulations.

The certification means the turbine is one step closer to making its planned offshore debut in 2025 at Vestas' He Dreiht and Baltic Power projects

The record-breaking turbine is the largest made by Vestas and features a 236-metre tutor blade diameter and hub height of around 145 metres.

It broke a power production record at Denmark’s onshore national test site at Østerild earlier this year, when it successfully produced 363MWh of wind energy over a 24hour period.

That achievement topped the previous 24-hour record of 359MWh produced by rival European manufacturer Siemens Gamesa’s 14MW SG 14-222 DD turbine
