Siemens Gamesa launches serial production of 11MW offshore wind turbine

Manufacturer begins serial production of 11MW offshore wind turbine, which has a 5.1GW global order book

Siemens Gamesa is due to supply its 11MW turbines for Vattenfall’s Hollandse Kust Zuid project in the Dutch North Sea

Siemens Gamesa has started serial production of its SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine.

The first serially manufactured nacelle left Siemens Gamesa’s factory hall in Cuxhaven, northern Germany today (14 January), and the first turbine has been assembled.

It is due to supply its 11MW turbines for Vattenfall’s 1520MW Hollandse Kust Zuid project in the Dutch North Sea, which is due to be the world’s first subsidy-free offshore wind farm.

Including the Hollandse Kust Zuid project, Siemens Gamesa has about 3.1GW of firm orders for the 11MW, plus another 2GW in preferred supplier agreements.

Siemens Gamesa first unveiled an 11MW offshore wind turbine in November 2019, and announced an upgraded version with a 200-metre rotor in March 2020.

Since then, the European manufacturer has announced a 14MW turbine, with a 15MW power mode, installed a prototype and produced first power from it.

Siemens Gamesa  began converting and upgrading the Cuxhaven plant in northern Germany in summer 2021 to prepare it for serial production of the next generation of its offshore wind turbines, with power ratings of 14MW.

It first opened its Cuxhaven plant in 2017, and manufactured the first nacelle there in February 2018.

Between 2018 and 2019, the manufacturer produced 7MW turbines in Cuxhaven, and produced more than 400 8MW turbines until summer 2021.

About 600 workers are employed at Cuxhaven, and the facility supplies offshore wind farms around the world.

Siemens Gamesa plans to start producing nacelles for its SG 14.0-222 DD turbines at Cuxhaven in 2024.

It plans to produce both nacelles and blades for itsSG 8.0-167 DD model at its new plant in Le Havre, France, which is due to open this spring.
