SGRE's 11MW turbine cleared for typhoon markets

TÜV Nord verifies that Siemens Gamesa’s 11MW offshore wind turbine can operate safely and efficiently in extreme wind conditions

Siemens Gamesa has received typhoon certification for its SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine from TÜV Nord.

It will need a separate rotor-nacelle assembly type certificate including for T-Class wind speeds for its 14MW turbine, the SG 14.0-222 DD. The manufacturer is due to supply more than 1GW of the 14MW turbine in Taiwan.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) determines T-Class wind speeds as those reaching 57m/s for ten minutes, or three-second gusts of 79.8m/s.

This certification from TÜV Nord verifies that the 11MW turbine can operate safely and efficiently in such conditions.

Siemens Gamesa explained this verification will be especially relevant for Asia Pacific, where it has already installed more than 2.1GW of turbines off Taiwan and China, and is due to install a further 2.4GW off Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The manufacturer stated that it is also working with local authorities and certifying bodies to ensure all applicable standards are considered for markets prone to typhoons.

GE Renewable Energy also recently secured similar certification – from DNV GL – for its 12-13MW Haliade-X offshore wind turbine.
