HP is set to buy 112MW of power from the 300MW South Plains II project in Texas to power all five of its data centre operations in Texas, the firm said. It is the first utility-scale renewable energy agreement signed by the US firm.
According to HP, the deal would allow SunEdison to begin building the 300MW South Plains II project, in Texas. The developer's TerraForm Power yieldco has the right to purchase the project once it is online.
The five data centres are located across Texas; in Houston, Hockley, Plano and two in Austin.
By adding the project, the technology company expects to reach its 2020 greenhouse gas target of reducing emissions by 20% five years ahead of schedule.
SunEdison purchased US-based First Wind last November for $2.4 billion, paying a premium for its development team with an active pipeline of 8GW of wind and solar projects. Included in the portfolio was 200MW South Plains I and 150MW South Plains II wind projects, both in development.
