ABB wins French offshore transmission deal

FRANCE: ABB will supply transformers to transmission operator RTE France to help integrate offshore projects to the nation's grid.

Alstom's Haliade turbine will be used at three of the projects ABB's transformers will serve

The nine 400 mega-volt ampere booster transformers will be installed along the French coast between 2017 and 2020. They will help control the power transmitted from the four French offshore projects.

ABB said the contract was worth €25 million.

The projects expected to benefit from the transformers will be Fecamp (498MW), Courseulles-sur-Mer (450MW), and Saint Nazaire (480M), which are being developed by the Eolien Maritime France consortium, made up from Dong Energy, EDF Energies Nouvelles and wpd. These will all use Alstom's Haliade 6MW turbine.

The fourth is the 496MW Saint Brieuc project developed by the Iberdrola-led Ailes Marine consortium. It is expected to use Adwen's 8MW turbine. Ailes Marine confirmed it attended to use Areva's turbine, before it formed the joint venture with Gamesa.

All projects are expected online between 2018 and 2020.
