Siemens hits 3MW milestone in Japan

JAPAN: Siemens first Japanese project to use its 3MW turbine, the 18MW Eurus Akitako wind farm in the city of Akita in north-west Japan has come online.

The project comprises six 3MW direct drive turbines with 101-metre rotors. Located at Mukaihama beach, one turbine has been positioned about 100-metres offshore.

As well as being the first time the Siemens 3MW turbine has been installed in Japan, it is also one of the largest to be used in the country. A Vestas 3MW V90 was installed at the Eurus Shin Izumo wind farm in April 2009.

The Japanese market is also awaiting the 7MW floating Mitsubishi Heavy Industry SeaAngel, which is set to start operations in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Fukushima this summer.

Akita Port marks the third wind farm in the region for developer Eurus, which now has 55.65MW installed capacity in Japan.
