Financial terms were not revealed, but the deal is expected to be closed in the "next few weeks", the Switch said in a statement.
In 2013, the two companies entered into a strategic partnership with the aim of developing high-power generators and converters. Under this deal, Yaskawa gained access to the Switch's capability in megawatt-class power generation and the Switch was able to develop its presence in Japan.
"This acquisition is a natural next step forward from our initial strategic collaboration," said Hiroyuki Ougi, Yaskawa's corporate senior vice president.
Yaskawa said that the move is part of its focus on growing its market share in renewable, marine and industrial applications that has been in place over the "past few years".
The Switch manufactures permanent magnet generators and low-voltage converters ranging from 500kW to 8MW, largely for wind turbines. It has more than 7GW installed globally. Yaskawa offers medium-voltage converters that have applications for wind turbines.
