The French energy company has signed a supply agreement with Vestas for the purchase of the turbines for US projects. The utility has also signed a 200MW deal with GE for a project in Texas.
A concrete order for Vestas' V100 2MW turbine amounting to 80MW was also announced, although the project names and locations were not disclosed. Delivery and commissioning is expected to occur in 2014 and 2015.
With the production tax credit expiring at the end of the year, a number of developers are rushing to get orders in to make the most of the subsidy.
"With the supply agreement in place, EDF Renewable Energy is well positioned to progress key US wind projects that will support near-term domestic manufacturing and construction jobs, and provide competitively priced, clean energy," said Ryan Pfaff, executive vice president of EDF Renewable Energy.
The supply agreement builds on a share wallet agreement between the two companies that bound EDF to buying 30% of its US turbines between 2012 and 2014 from Vestas.
When contacted, Vestas was unable to confirm whether the supply agreement set a minimum that EDF would have to order.
Following the recent closure of a number of the company's US factories, workers at Vestas' plants in Colorado will breathe a sigh of relief with the announcement that the factories will be involved in manufacturing blades, nacelles and towers for these projects.
