The Danish company has approached the Isle of Wight Council to become a special purchaser of a former rubbish tip next to their blade development facility.
It could cost the company between £3.5 to £5 million to decontaminate the area, which is a requirement of the UK’s Environment Agency before any development on the land.
A Vestas spokesperson said: "Vestas is investigating an option agreement to purchase land on the Isle of Wight next to our existing blade test and verification centre, to be used for storing prototype blades. The land has been used as a waste disposal facility."
The turbine manufacturer is testing its V164 8MW offshore turbine at its research centre on the island. With a 164-metre rotor diameter the turbine could become the world's most powerful wind turbine blade.
Vestas tests all prototype blades at its Isle of Wight facility, including the V112-3.3MW, V117-3.3MW, V126-3.3MW and V110-2MW and it hopes to store those blades at the new site.
Council officers are recommending Cabinet members approve the request to treat Vestas as a special purchaser for the land, where it will make a decision on 17 September.
