A school on the Isle of Wight, specialising in marine manufacturing and offshore energy, aims to open from September 2014. The 'Studio School' would be the first of its kind on the island and cater for up to 300 14 to 19-year-olds.
Plans for the school, which are subject to approval by the UK Department for Education, have been submitted by Southampton Studio School Academy Trust.
The school would specialise in marine manufacturing and offshore energy-related areas of study. Working closely with local businesses, it would offer a standard secondary school curriculum alongside work placements, more advanced studies and apprenticeships.
Helen Mason, project director at Southampton Studio School Academy Trust, told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore: "We are confident that there will be offshore energy-related job opportunities for young people in the Isle of Wight and Solent area over the next ten years, and we are now inviting local employers to partner the school and develop the curriculum."
Vestas is an established Isle of Wight-based employer, while off the island's south-west coast, EDF and Eneco plan to develop a 0.9-1.2GW wind farm. Navitus Bay – formerly known as West of Isle of Wight – could be under construction between 2017 and 2021. If it goes ahead, around 1,000 temporary and 100 permanent jobs would be created.
