The federal government has changed the rules for its energy auction on 13 December to allow wind power projects to compete for contracts.
The tender was originally aimed at attracting big thermo- and hydro-electric projects. Power delivery is not scheduled to start until late 2018 to provide enough time for the construction of dams.
However, the government left the door open for wind projects by saying it would allow unsold power from previous auctions to participate.
The wind-only auction held on 23 August resulted in 1.5GW of contracts being awarded, although projects amounting to 16GW sought registration.
Brazil’s wind power association Abeeolica has welcomed the government’s decision, saying it will create jobs and increase the supply security of its electricity system through diversification of energy sources.
Abeeolica said Brazil’s wind power sector needs to contract 2GW of new projects a year to create sufficient demand for the country’s newly built turbine plants.
