The bidders, representing all types of energy sources including renewables, are pitching for 20-year power-purchase agreements (PPAs), with energy deliveries due to start in January 2016.
A spokesman for Brazil’s Mining and Energy ministry told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç that developers needed a few more weeks to prepare and register their bids that, if successful, will guarantee access to Brazil’s national electricity grid.
Brazil is holding three auctions before the end of the year for which developers are preparing simultaneously.
On 23 August the government will hold an auction for wind power developers only. A maximum price of BRL 117/MWh (approximately $50/MWh) has been set with power delivery starting in September 2015.
The government has approved 377 projects with a combined installed capacity of 9GW to participate in the auction.
The third auction, scheduled for 13 December, will focus on Brazil’s traditional energy sources — hydro- and thermo-electric power. Wind power projects will only be admitted if there are "left-overs" from the previous auctions that enjoy government support.
Brazil extends deadline for developer bids
