Wind makes up 77% of Brazil energy bids

BRAZIL: Wind projects account for 77% of the capacity in the bids submitted for Brazil's November energy auction.

Companies looking to finance projects in Brazil are subject to local sourcing rules

Just over 15GW in 629 tenders for wind farms were lodged with the country's Energy Planning Company (EPE).

The auction, to be held on 18 November, will see companies pitching for 20-year power-purchase agreements due to start in January 2016.

"The result of this registration reflects a warming to the wind energy market in Brazil," EPE said in a statement.

A total of 784 projects were put forward with capacity of 19.4GW.

The auction was postponed from its original date of 25 October to allow project developers more time to prepare the necessary documentation.

In August, the federal government changed the rules for its energy auction in December to allow wind projects to compete for contracts.

The tender was originally aimed at attracting big thermo- and hydro-electric projects, but the rules were changed to account for the buoyant nature of the wind market.
