Developers, Smart Wind - a joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Project Ventures - and Dong Energy submitted the application for the 1.2GW, 332-turbine project on 30 July after being granted the lease to the territorial waters in 2011.
The project would see the first offshore wind farms developed in the Hornsea zone, which covers 407 kilometres located 103 kilometres off the Yorkshire coast. Longer-term plans for the development of the zone would see the companies install 4GW.
The proposal comprises four distinct wind farms. The current application covers Heron Wind, Njord, while Optimus Wind and Breesea will be covered by a second application that is expected go before the UK permitting authorities next year.
Smart Wind said it expects a recommendation to be issued by the planning expectorate, followed by a decision by the secretary of state for energy by the end of 2014. This would allow it to move into the construction phase shortly after.
