Northern Power partners with Weg to expand into South America

BRAZIL: US turbine maker Northern Power Systems has entered into a strategic partnership with Brazilian electrical equipment manufacturers Weg to expand the reach of its permanent magnet generator (PMG) direct-drive technology in the South American market.

Weg has secured commitments for initial orders and will be scaling production operations throughout 2013 and 2014 with the wind turbines being produced at the company’s manufacturing facilities in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina state, Brazil.

Weg is offering wind turbines rated between 2.1 and 2.3MW and rotors sized from 93 metres to 110 metres for a range of a wind classes.

Joao Paulo Gualberto da Silva, Weg’s head of wind energy generation business, said: "We believe Northern Power’s technology offers a significant performance advantage to a vast array of customers in South America.

"The South American wind market, particularly Brazil, is growing at an incredible rate, and the initial market response to Weg’s turbine offerings has been very positive."
