Weg/MTOI sign first contract on 90MW wind project

BRAZIL: A joint venture between Brazilian industrial conglomerate and Spain's M.Torres Olvega (MTOI) has signed the first turbine supply contract since the 50/50 joint-venture was announced in early 2011.

MTOI: contract signed with Weg

Weg/MTOI will supply 39, 2.3MW turbines manufactured locally and adapted to Brazilian wind and climate conditions.

A total of 90MW of turbines will be supplied by 2016 when the wind project is due to start commercial operations.

The announcement comes as some foreign manufacturers try to increase local content to comply with financing requirements to re-enlist their products in the Finame cheap financing program offered by Brazil’s national development bank BNDES.

The de-listing from Finame has opened opportunities for companies like Weg, which were kept on the list.

Weg could not disclose details of the new contract as it is bound by a confidentiality agreement, a company spokesperson told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.

All the turbines will be manufactured in the company's factory in Jaraguá do Sul, in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. According to the company's statement, the new turbine will have 80% of national content and awaits certification.
