The crane simulator, in Ålesund on Norway's west coast, aims to replicate the turbine installation process under realistic offshore conditions.
This will simulate the lifting of a wind turbine and foundation components from feeder vessels on to a deck. It can also be used in training crane drivers, marine and installation crew to communicate with each other, minimising the risk of health-and-safety-related incidents.
Inwind said simulating the entire installation process prior to moving offshore will allow clients, contractors, marine warranty surveyors to test and optimise the deck layout and installation methods.
The company also claimed it will reduce the installation time required offshore, leading to earlier power production and lower energy costs.
The development of the simulator has been partly funded by Innovation Norway.
