Logistics software designed to cut costs

Niels Winther Shipping to employ STX simulation tool

Niels Winther Shipping is to offer clients the use of new logistics software designed to optimise project planning and contribute to reductions in offshore wind’s cost of energy.

The offshore wind consultancy will market Log-Eole software, designed by STX France Solutions, in order to support its clients’ cost control efforts. The software has been created to simulate the increasingly-complex logistical issues arising from offshore wind developments.

"We believe there is considerable potential for cost reduction in the supply chain for current and future wind farms… In order to reduce logistics, storage and handling costs, every step in the supply chain should be analysed, from the origin of components to the actual utilisation of the ports," explains Henrik Otto Jensen, managing director of Niels Winther Shipping.

Niels Winther has provided logistics advice to offshore wind players in Denmark, Germany and the UK, including those involved in UK Round 2 and 3 projects. Its client base includes major utilities and installation contractors. It is one of a group of port of Esbjerg-based companies active in offshore wind support services.

Esbjerg has succeeded in winning a significant share of the offshore wind ports services market, in part, thanks to its close proximity to Siemens’ facility at Brande, which produces the 3.6MW turbine. It has regularly acted as the primary port during construction of offshore wind farms off the UK’s east coast, including London Array.
