Danish consultancy Ramboll has confirmed its ambition to play a major role in Europe's offshore wind with the acquisition of Germany's IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft, which has a Hamburg-based workforce of 57 highly specialised employees. The move follows Ramboll's acquisition of wind turbine design specialist LEC Engineering in October.
Europe's renewable energy targets to 2020 mean that offshore wind will see significant growth in Northern Europe, especially Germany and the UK. "Some 2,500 man-years for the development and management of offshore wind farms will be required over the next decade," said Ramboll Energy's managing director, Thomas Rand.
IMS is a well-established player in the German offshore wind market. Its key competence is detailed design of offshore wind farms. It boasts expertise in jacket foundations and substations and provides specialised hydraulic, civil and environmental engineering services, which are complementary to Ramboll's offering.
"IMS fits perfectly into the strategy of Ramboll to become the leading European energy consultant and maintain its position as the world’s leading designer of offshore wind turbine foundations", said the director of Ramboll’s wind division, Klaus Jacob Jensen.
Ramboll has performed more than 1,300 individual foundation designs for 24 offshore wind farms around the world, totalling approximately 50% of installations.
