The first 200MW phase of the 400MW Borkum West 2 project should be installed by the end of October, according to project management firm, GL Noble Denton.
The project’s offshore electricity transformer station will be loaded onto a barge by early March for transport to the German North Sea site, while tripods will be fully installed by May, explained project manager Jürgen Ruge, speaking at GL Garrad Hassan’s offshore wind conference in Hamburg.
Construction of Borkum West 2 has been "stretched out" due to grid connection delays, acknowledged Ruge. This resulted in a lot of extra work for the project team, with staff having to revise contracts and negotiate new ones. These delays are now resolved, said Ruge, with inter-array cable laying scheduled to begin toward the end of April.
Turbine installation will begin in May and be undertaken by MPI Adventure, with the Areva 5MW components already waiting at the Dutch port of Elmshaven.
Noise mitigation efforts during piling work were successful, explained Ruge, with use of a bubble curtain ensuring that decibel levels remained under German regulatory limits. "The bubble curtain really works," he said.
