Seacat Defender bound for West of Duddon Sands

New workboat set for first assignment

Seacat Services' new vessel Seacat Defender is set for deployment at the West of Duddon Sands (WoDS) project. Chartered by Nexans for eight months, it will join Seacat Resolute, transferring cable-jointing, fibre-optics and hang-off teams to the Irish Sea project site.

Operating out of Barrow-in-Furness, the vessels will be "in service by the end of July," Ian Baylis, Seacat Services' managing director told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.

Built by South Boats Isle of Wight Limited, the Seacat Defender is the third 24m specialist craft to have been commissioned, launched and chartered by Seacat Services in the past 18 months.

"Developers and project owners are increasingly looking for class-certified vessels that can operate in the widest possible weather windows," said Baylis. "In the past two years, South Boats Isle of Wight Limited has commissioned and built all five of our twin-hulled workboats."

The 389MW WoDS is being developed by DONG Energy and ScottishPower Renewables, 14km off Walney Island, Cumbria. Foundations installation is about to commence and the 108-turbine project is due for completion in 2014.
