VSMC wins cabling contract for Nordsee Ost

GERMANY: International submarine power cables installation contractor Visser & Smit Marine Contracting (VSMC) has won a contract from RWE Innogy to lay and bury the infield cables for the 295MW Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

Partnered by Boskalis Offshore Subsea Contracting, VSMC will start the work in Q1 2014. The scope involves installation and burying of 52 cables to connect the 48 wind turbines to the offshore high-voltage station. VSMC is currently installing the cables of the adjacent Meerwind Süd/Ost Offshore wind farm.

The Nordsee Ost contract is the second in which RWE Innogy is involved. In 2012, VSMC completed installation of the export cables for the Thornton Bank wind farmoff the Belgian coast, in which RWE Innogy is major shareholder.

The Nordsee Ost deal follows barely four weeks after two separate contracts to lay and bury export cables for the UK offshore wind farms Westermost Rough and Humber Gateway that were announced by VSMC in June.
