Gamesa debuts 2.5MW turbine at AWEA

UNITED STATES: Gamesa has unveiled its G114 2.5MW turbine at the AWEA “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç conference in Chicago.

The new machine is based on the G97 2MW turbine

The turbine, part of Gamesa's aim to target the low-medium (class II) wind sector, is based on the company's existing 2MW platform. It will be commercially available in 2014.

According to Gamesa, the turbine produces 29% more electricity than the G97. The cost of energy is also 10% cheaper.

It said the G114 uses a new generator, but also shared components with the G114 2MW turbine, which was launched last year.

Next year Gamesa is set to test a new 2.5MW platform. In October 2012, the company said the 2.5MW platform, and the 5.5MW onshore/offshore turbine, will come out in Q2 2014 and Q4 2014 respectively.

The 2.5-3MW low-medium class is one of the most competitive categories in the wind sector, with GE, Vestas, Nordex and Enercon announcing new products recently.
