The series comprises the initial 3MW ECO 100, an ECO 110 with an enlarged 110-metre rotor diameter and the latest 2.7MW ECO 122 (122 metres).
The 122-metre version is representative of the current major trend towards adapting turbines for low wind conditions. This is characterised by a combination of modest power rating and large rotor diameter.
The ECO 110, initially designed for IEC WC IIA medium wind speed sites is now available for more demanding IEC 1S (S = special conditions) locations as well.
The ECO 122, certified for class III sites with up to 7.5 m/s medium wind speeds, is being upgraded to class IIIA and IIB sites (B = lower turbulence).
Alstom claims that the upgrade increases net capacity factors up to 48% for both sister models, which will have a positive impact on lowering the cost of energy.
The ECO 100 remains available for IEC WC 1A high wind conditions. Alstom said the ECO 100 platform has a total of over 900MW already operational or under construction.
